Conducted entirely in Chinese, if you hate Chinese, has no interest in Chinese Language, sucks in han yu pin yin, this module isn't for you at all. It touches on grammar, phonetics, analysis of sentence structure and minimal history of Chinese Language. It also expects you to know what is the modern chinese equivalent meaning of some 古文, esp that of Confucius. 3 assignments in total, as long as you pay attention during lecture and have the lecture slides with you, the assignments are pretty easy to score. They are quite lenient for assignments. Lecturer is helpful, once went to find him for consultation, he tries his best to explain to you. Tutors I got were pretty good in my opinion, i understood many things via tutorials better actually. Final isn't exactly that easy I feel, there are definitely questions on sentence structure analysis and phonetics analysis, the biggest problem is the challenging question that is worth 10 marks. It isn't something you can answer by memorising, that was probably the question to differentiate As and Bs. Something to note, because i haven't been in touch with Chinese since O's, i kinda forget how to write certain chinese characters, that can be quite a killer when u try to do your paper entirely in Chinese.

I love Japan, but to be honest, this module was rather dry... It covers the entire history of Japan, gender issues, culture, discrimination etc. You would want to doze off during lectures, Dr Hislop, the lecturer does makes the lecture more interesting by including many trivia and personal opinions. He also showed us clips of Noh and 1 hr 45 mins long of Kabuki play. Please do stay awake during all these no matter how boring it may seems, because it is tested. I honestly disliked his slides, because it contains very little info! I suggest bringing a recorder to record what he says so that you can review in case you can't take note of what he is saying, what he says is really important, as majority of what is tested in final came from what he said during the lecture than the lecture slides itself or readings. Readings were important especially those in the form of stories, or the script for a kabuki act. They tested on these, which most people probably skipped or deemed as useless. The most sickening part of this module is... project. You have to write something like PW's written report. You can choose whatever topic you want, sounds good, but you would rather they gave a topic. There are so many things that you can touch on about Japan, but you need something that can be argued and has many academic materials. Tutorials were basically just discussions, kinda fun at times, dry at times, but can be interesting too.

To anime lovers, this film certainly doesn't satisfy your one piece, naruto or (insert whatever anime name) obsession. It covers films and animes all the way form 1920s (this includes black and white silent film) to present. Films covered were generally interesting, the black and white film which i thought i would be sleeping throughout was good. Those early animes before world war were kinda boring to me, but the lecturer gets pretty high about it. You have to watch films outside lecture and tutorial time, so... it means additional time you have to spend on this module. In addition, you have to write an essay on a film not covered in lecture, there are a list of films to choose from. Then, there is also a project where you have to do a presentation on ANY japanese film/anime that you and your grp mates decide on. You can do your presentation in any forms, ppt slides, videos etc. It was really fun looking at various presentations, it shows you many good Japanese films that one could watch. There are in-class assignments, where you have to write critical question/summary on a film or reading within like 5-10 mins, and it's graded. -.- Final was quite do-able as long as you watch the films, listen in lectures, readings i feel weren't of a major importance. I didn't finish my readings, it was way too thick, but i manage to do the exam just fine. Exams had 5 mcqs and 3 essay questions. This module is pretty slack, overall quite interesting, it's just the indv essay that kinda turns people off.

I recommend people to take this as UE/breadth, it was pretty ok. It covers basically many things of what new media is about, there are some theories that you have to know, who invented internet etc. Assignments are do-able, though the last assignment on interactive media design was kinda troublesome, it actually needed you to find someone to use a software and analyse on the user's understanding of the software using theories taught in readings. Tutorials were basically discussions, my tutor was good, she was good at explaining concepts in which we are unclear about, makes thing easier for us. She prepared things we need to know before exams, which i think is really useful! Lectures were normal, nothing out of the box, certain video clips were shown to increase our understanding. The lecturer on interactive media design is really unique in his way of teaching, his lecture was very interactive. Hard to explain in what ways, but pretty fun. Things tested in mid terms would not be tested again in final, that is a big plus point.

No tutorials! Even if you have no Bio background at all, don't fear to take this. The lecturers explain the concepts in such a way to ensure people with entirely no Bio background can understand. I took pure Bio at O's, but to me, it doesn't felt like it helped me greatly, how could i remember things taught 3 years ago anyway. Lectures were enjoyable, i got to see dinosaur fossils, venus flytrap and many others. The videos shown during lectures were really interesting as well, perks you up while things start getting dry. The 2 lecturers were great, they even held live chat sessions to answer questions before finals. Lab sessions were fun, we get to examine skulls, ferment grapes so that we get wine and many others. Practical assignments to complete after every lab session, not lab reports, just short answer questions. No need to buy lab coat, they give u one sort of like a poncho, bring it along everytime, tats fine. Charge you $1/$2 when u forget to bring though. At the last lecture, they used the money earned and bought toblerone for everyone! Overall quite slack and can score... Final is open book, mcq, if you are not a sci major, there is no need to buy the textbook, enough to get by with lecture slides.

i think there are many posts on childhood life, so i thought i would do my own version of my childhood recollection!
there would surely be many overlaps, but well, it's a collective memory i guess all of us have.
